American water

The States paddle three ways: springs, mangroves and canyon walls.

Central Florida runs clear over limestone springs. The Gulf and the Keys are root tunnels you duck through. West of that it is canyon water on the Colorado and the sea caves under La Jolla. Three different days out, three different prices.

What fills up first

The paddling trips more people book than anything else.

Cave runs, karst bays and one glowing lagoon. These carry more paddlers than anything else on the site, and each one earns the slot differently.

Ha Long Bay Day Cruise – Swimming, Meal, Kayaking

You’ll leave Hanoi early for a full day on Ha Long Bay, with a modern bus, English-speaking guide, seafood lunch, cave visit, kayaking or bamboo boat ride, swimming, and a Titop Island hike. Guides such as Sunny, Alex, Ken, and Tom are frequently assigned, but the exact guide varies.

Where the water is

Florida springs, Algarve limestone, Phang Nga, Ha Long, the Dalmatian islands.

Six countries carry most of the world’s guided paddling. Clear springs and mangrove tunnels in the States, roofless caves in Portugal, karst towers in Thailand and Vietnam, walled-city water in Croatia, and a Spanish coast built for a snorkel stop.

The Algarve

The Algarve is one long sea cave, and Benagil is only the famous one.

Lagos to Portimão is limestone worn into arches, blowholes and roofless caverns you can paddle straight into. Plenty of operators stop outside Benagil because the swell says so. The good ones tell you that before you pay.

Only there

Three paddles that happen in exactly one place.

Caves and calm bays exist on every coast. A dome with a hole in its roof, a lagoon that lights up under the blade, and a bay of limestone towers with villages floating between them do not.

Algarve limestone

Inside the Benagil dome

The roof of the cave collapsed a long time ago and left a circle of sky over a private beach, reachable only from the water. Kayaks launch off Benagil beach or come round from Portimão and Albufeira. Entry depends on the swell rather than the forecast, so morning departures get in far more often than afternoon ones, and the boats that motor past without landing are not being lazy.

After dark

Water that lights up when you paddle

Single-celled plankton in a handful of sheltered bays flash blue when the water is disturbed, so every blade stroke leaves a streak behind it. Fajardo in Puerto Rico, Mosquito Bay on Vieques and a few Florida lagoons hold the densest populations. Moonlight drowns the effect completely, which is why guides sell the nights either side of a new moon first and shut the calendar afterwards.

Karst towers

Through the caves of Ha Long

Two thousand limestone islands sit in a bay shallow enough to paddle, with sea tunnels cut through several of them into hidden lagoons. Almost nobody paddles it from shore: the kayak window is an hour or two slotted into a cruise day out of Ha Long or Cat Ba. The tunnels have headroom at low water and none at all at high, which is the real reason the timetable is fixed.

What it costs

What a day on the water actually costs.

Every trip on the site, grouped by what you pay to get in a boat. A good share of the best paddling in the world comes in under the price of a hotel breakfast.

Under $50

Hourly rentals, flat-water SUP sessions and the two-hour cave paddles you can still book the night before.

$50–150

The standard guided half-day: caves, mangrove tunnels, bioluminescent bays, gear, guide and usually a photo set.

$150 and up

Private guides, multi-day river trips and the boat-plus-paddle days that run from the first ferry to the last light.

Thailand

In Phang Nga Bay somebody else paddles and you lie flat.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 4,666 paddlers on the most-booked day out

A hong is a collapsed cave roof inside a limestone island, reached through a tunnel with about a foot of headroom at the wrong tide. Sea canoes with a guide in the back are the only way in, which is why nearly every Phuket day out is sold as a boat trip with paddling attached rather than the other way round.

The big-boat day

Phang Nga by cruiser, hongs by canoe

7–9h· James Bond stop· lunch on board

A big boat out of Phuket, then inflatable canoes and a paddler each for the tunnels at Hong Island and Panak. The day is long, the swim stop is real, and the famous rock is the least interesting part of it.

The plankton one

Twilight sea canoes, then glowing water

5–6h· evening start· dinner on board

The same limestone islands after the day boats leave, with dinner on deck and a paddle out once it is properly dark. The plankton show is weather-dependent and nobody honest promises it.

The mangrove one

Ao Thalane, paddled yourself

3–4h· you paddle· flat water

Krabi’s mangrove channels run between limestone walls with no swell and no current worth the name. This is the trip to take if you want the paddling to be yours rather than a guide’s.

Before you book

What an outfitter asks before they let you launch.

Almost every guided paddle wants a swimmer, a minimum age and a weight under the boat’s limit. A sit-on-top single forgives everything; a sea kayak with a spray deck forgives very little. Cave and bio-bay trips add a swell or a moon rule on top. If you have never held a paddle, start on flat water with a lesson or a rental and work up.

Croatia

Croatia paddles under city walls and out to the Pakleni islands.

Dubrovnik launches from a pebble beach below the ramparts and rounds Lokrum before the ferries wake up. Further north it is Pula’s quarry cliffs and the Zrmanja running green through a canyon. Short crossings, warm water, almost no tide to plan around.

Book ahead

Four paddling days that will not wait for you.

Most of this sport is bookable from a beach bar the night before. These four run on tides, moon phases, permits and cruise timetables, none of which care when your flight lands.

  1. 01Kayaking Tour to the Benagil Cave (Free Shower)Getting inside the dome depends on the swell, so the morning departures are the ones that manage it. In summer they are gone weeks out.
  2. 02Puerto Rico Bio Bay Kayak Adventure TourThe glow only reads properly on a dark moon. The nights either side of a new moon sell first and there is no second chance that week.
  3. 03Half-Day Emerald Cave Kayak Tour with Optional Hotel PickupThat stretch of the Colorado runs on dated launch permits with a daily cap. Without one you are paddling somewhere else.
  4. 04Ha Long Bay Day Cruise – Swimming, Meal, KayakingThe paddle is a slot inside a cruise timetable, not a decision you make on the morning. Boats leave the harbour whether you are on them or not.
